Making Connections with our Past- Present & Future
Here is a reply e mail from South Georgia!
If thers any way you can help, photos etc, please forward them to me so I can send to Elsa. Ties between SGHT & Antrim should be even stronger......... link to SGHT web site in Links
Dear Craig, (Mac)
Thank you for your email, I am sorry for taking so long to get back to you - things, as always, have been pretty hectic since arriving back in Grytviken.
I hope you had a very good reunion/meeting the other week, it is great that you all get together each year. I was having a look on your website and it is super that it is so active.
Thank you also for your kind offer of help for the Museum. If there are any particularly interesting images or documents which we could have a copy of that would be great. I will also update our display to state that the 4.5 cartridge came from HMS Antrim. I have recently been processing all the material which came from Shackleton House when it was demolished in 2001, I am looking forward to extending our military display and increasing the information on events in 1982.
I will be sure to keep you informed of developments here at the Museum, particularly relating to military history. We have a lot of interest in 'Operation Paraquat' from our visitors and it has been great to make this contact with you.
It is a beautiful sunny morning at King Edward Point with some fresh snowfall. A large group of elephant seals reside just outside the kitchen window and they seem to be in particularly high spirits today. I think they quite enjoy keeping us awake all night too!
Best wishes from us all at the Museum,
Elsa

To all at Antrim association
Dear Members of the Association, your opinions & help is required. Here is a copy of Taff Dales's e mails & replies to
Matthew Sheldon,
Head of Curatorial Department
Royal Naval Museum
This time I am contacting you as a member of the HMS Antrim Association committee, we have a model of the ship which comes along and has pride of place at all our annual reunions around the country. The model is a full scale model of the ship at 1st Commission and was built by the 1st Buffer of HMS Antrim, Reg Edwards. Unfortunately Reg is no longer with us and the model now resides in the Royal Southsea Yacht Club, in the library, on top of a bookcase for most of the year. The model, which is approx. 6" X 1" X 2", has recently undergone a refit and is in excellent condition. It is a great shame that this particular piece of maritime history can not be viewed by more people. It was agreed at the last Committee meeting that I contact you and see if we can make some arrangements to give the ship a permanent home in the museum, providing that we could remove it annually around the 2nd weekend in October for the reunions. I visited the dockyard yesterday with my family and noticed that there are no models of any of the Portsmouth based GMD's on display! Taff
Chris, (Taff) Thank you for your email and the offer. I can confirm that we are certainly interested. We have one model of HMS Devonshire which is in very poor repair and so we would like to deaccession this model and replace it with Antrim. Unfortunately we would be unable to guarantee if or when the model is displayed as our display space is extremely limited and we would need to integrate it into existing displays. Having said this we may well be able to display it elsewhere in the Museum ie landing or corridor until we can find space in a permanent gallery. We hold the nameboards from Antrim so these could be displayed on the base. I'm assuming from the photographs the model doesn't have a perspex or glass cover? Does it have any form of case? We are unable to accept items on loan (unless for display) and so we would require the model to be an outright gift but I do not foresee any major problems with loaning the model back to the Association for reunions.
Matthew
So, what do we do? I don't think (personal thought) theres much to think about, however, it's the memebrs choice. Please have a think about it, & in October we can make an informed, Association decision.

Another great effort by ex Antrim veteran.
Hello Guys,
I emailed the Antrim site a few months ago with a few anecdotes. I was on the Far east commission from 1978-1981, I remember Wally Swift and Taff. In fact I served with Collingwood CBM with Taff before being drafted to the Antrim. I was an LREM (LwemR) 3P and 2E messes.
I'm contacting you because I am about to do a Charity Cycle Ride from Rome to Monte Carlo for Help for Heroes and Leukaemia Research. My on-line donations pages to other ships co' members.
The sites are:
H4H www.justgiving.com/eddiegrice
Leukaemia is www.justgiving.com/eddiegrice1
Kind regards,
Eddie Grice.
Good luck Eddie, from all at The Antrim Association
Lets give generously to this worthwhile effort. (mark your donation Antrim Asso)
