HERE WE WILL PROFILE A MEMBER OF THE ANTRIMS CREW

Captain Brian G Young  RN ( Retd) DSO

Brian G Young joined the Royal Navy in 1944 as a Cadet at Eaton hall, Chester, & Dartmouth. He served as a Midshipman & Sub Lieutenant in HMS King George V, Theseus & Wren. Promoted to Lt. in 1952 & sent to U.S.A. for fixed wing pilot training. He then served with 803 & 804 NAS, flying SeaHawks From HM Ships Albion, Centaur, Bulwak, & Ark Royal. (1954-58) He took part in ground attack missions in Egypt, during Suez.(804 Sqn NAS HMS Bulwark). Took up exchange draft with RAF, as Hunter INSTRUCTOR, 1958-60 (well someone had to show them (RAF) how to do it right). Then became senoir pilot with 804 NAS (scimitars) on HMS Hermes. Promoted to Lt Cdm in 1960, & attended RN staff Collage. Afetr Staff appointment, he commanded 892 NAS (Sea Vixens) on HMS Centaur, which was involved in confrontation in Indonesia, 1964-65. In 1965-66, he commanded 766 NAS (sea Vixens) Naval  Air Fighter School ('TOP GUN') at RNAS Yeovilton, & was promoted Commander. After that he was appointed to command HMS Wiston, Senoir officer 9th Mine counter measure Sqn, based in Bahrein, Arabian Gulf. In 1968, Atended Joint Services Staff Colleage & was Commander (air) RNAS Lossimouth 1968-70.  1970-72 saw him as Commander (Air) HMS Eagle.He then took up appointment of Staff Aviation officer to Flag Officer Carriers & Amphibious ships from 1972-74. Commanded HMS Danae 1974-75 & attended Senoirs officers' war course, RNC Greenwich 1976.  He was appointed Assitant Cheif of Staff (Warfare) to CINCFLEET in 1976, & Chief of Staff to FONAC ( as Commodore)  in 1978.

His final ( & best ) appointment was to HNS ANTRIM, in 1981. His command of Operation Paraquat, task force commander of 317.9. was executed with such knowledge & experience, there is no doubt many people owe him much more than just knowing him.

He left the Royal Navy 2 years later. He is still married to the delightful Sheila, whom we all adore.

Admitted to the Distinguished Service Order.
